One and alla captivated by “il divino Cipriano”! Fierce polemics concerning music flared up around the turn of the seventeenth century, yet on one point, at least the adversaries involved were in agreement: a recognition of the merit and importance of the great Flemish composer Cipriano de Rore (1515-1565), unanimously considered amongst the great classic figures of the polyphonic art.
Zarlino and Artusi admired the rare stylistic “smoothness” of an excellent – and especially talented – pupil of Adrian Willaert. In him Monteverdi identified the stampo of an audacious innovator, capable of opening up hitherto unknown routes for the art of the madrigal. Finally, Bardi considered him as the sole modern polyphonist capable of re-establishing the legendary effectiveness of ancient Greek music.
This recorded anthology aims to highlight the later Cipriano – the one which fascinated Bardi and Monteverdi so compellingly.Vieni, dolce Imeneo serves as the album title here as a reflection of the ideal union between poetry and music: one of the distinctive features of Cipriano de Rore’s mastery.
